The hills around the southern part of Lake Garda are covered with olive groves, some of which are centuries old. There are many varieties of olives and the many mills of the area produce excellent oil. Among the most popular varieties are Frantoio, Leccino and Casaliva, which give the oil a naturally delicate flavor, which smells of fresh grass, aromatic herbs, hay and artichoke, with the typical almond aftertaste and low acidity.
Garda oil is a DOP (Protected Designation of Origin).
